Schools Case Study of the Week

Audenshaw School

Introduction:Audenshaw School logo

On September 13th, 1932 seventy-six boys walked through the gates of a brand new Grammar School on Hazel Street Audenshaw.

The Queen Mother visited the school in 1959 to present colours to the Manchester Regiment and in 2007, the school celebrated its 75th anniversary with a visit by HRH The Princess Royal who officially opened the Sixth Form extension.

Audenshaw School aims to be recognised as a fully inclusive, aspiration, high achieving centre of excellence, firmly rooted in the local community and will maintain a safe, secure and caring environment in which to work and learn.

Project:

Audenshaw School have refurbished the army hut as a Learning Resource Centre and approached PW Data Group looking to provide network connectivity for pupils and staff via the main building.

Challenges:

The unit is separated from the Main School Campus, and is also divided by a public strip of land ruling out the option of installing fibre optic cabling, which would have been a logistical problem and also expensive.

Solution:

Following a site survey completed by the technical team, it was concluded that a design for a Free Space Optical Link (FSO) & back up Radio Link would be the best solution to bridge the two buildings and provide network connectivity to the Learning Resource Centre. FSO is a line-of-sight technology that uses infra-red beams of light to provide optical bandwidth connections that can send and receive voice, video and data information. In addition a 5Gbps radio gave a secondary network link which automatically provides an alternative route in the event of a primary failure, so maintaining transmission.

There was a clear line of sight to link the buildings across the public strip, which allowed FSO to be to be deployed quickly without the need for any licenses or ducting across a public highway, for a competitive one of capital outlay. Today, FSO has enabled the development of a new category of outdoor Wireless products that can transmit voice, data and video at bandwidths of up to 1.25Gbps.
